Historic Preservation
The Wisconsin Historical Society's mission includes preservation as a key tenant. Through our work with the State Historic Preservation Office we're able to support preservation efforts across the state. We also provide the resources for individuals and local governments to help preserve our wonderful state history.
State Historic Preservation Office
The Society serves as Wisconsin’s federally designated State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). The SHPO helps people connect to the past through historic places. We coordinate state and federal preservation programs that help the people of Wisconsin preserve historic places that are important to their communities. We also maintain state records for historic properties and archaeological sites.

Collections Care
The Society strives to provide the best care for our collections. Upon arrival, we assess the collection for major conservation problems. At the state-of-the-art State Archive Preservation Facility the Society stores collections in climate controlled preservation storage. We have two conservation labs where professionally trained staff provide preservation and conservation care for our collections.
