Hoyt Vanderberg was the second chief of staff of the Air Force as an independent branch of the United States military. During the early years of the Cold War he established the role of the Air Force in defense policy and oversaw both the Berlin Airlift and the air war in Korea. Nathan F. Twining succeeded Vandenberg in 1953. Twining's tenure witnessed the development of the long-range Strategic Air Command. In 1957 he became the first Air Force officer to serve as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Twining retired in 1961. |
