Markham Waves to the Crowd
Beryl Markham, a former Kenyan bush pilot, waves to the crowd as she arrives at Floyd Bennett Field in New York. She had just completed the first solo east-to-west Atlantic crossing by a woman. To her left, in the hat, is her publicist, Harry Bruno. Bruno's papers are one of many mass communications collections in the Historical Society Archives. |

The airplane in the background is not the "Messenger," Mrs. Markham's plane, as that plane had crashed in Newfoundland. Markham walked away with only the cut on her forehead. Afraid that she would be viewed as a failure because she had not made it to New York City, her real destination, Mrs. Markham was instead welcomed as a heroine. |
