In "Hell's Angels," millionaire Howard Hughes was able to combine his twin passions for motion pictures and aviation, and to be authentic, Hughes spared no expense. He purchased many vintage airplanes, even a German dirigible that was burned during the action. This attention to historical accuracy made the aerial combat scenes memorable. This sequence, with actors Ben Lyon and James Hall, was reportedly filmed at an altitude of 3,000 feet. "Hells' Angels" is also notable as the first important screen appearance of Jean Harlow.
