Corben Christening

RKO motion picture actress Raquel Torres christening the new model airplane manufactured in Madison by Orland Corben. Corben had flown the airplane that brought Torres to Madison for an appearance at the Orpheum Theatre, and he probably arranged for her participation then. The new plane was the Corben Junior Ace. (The use of soda pop rather than champagne for the christening was necessitated by Prohibition.) |

The Corben Sport Plane Company began manufacturing planes in the Midwest Air Transport Co. hangar located at the Madison (or North Street) Airport in 1931. Corben sold fly-away planes as well as kits for home construction. Corben went out of business and left Madison in the mid 1930s. In 1954 Paul Poberezny, founder of the EAA, purchased the Corben plans. Currently the Corben plans and kits are sold the Ace Aircraft, Inc. |
