Cole (1819-1903), served as a Congressman (1849-1851), and Wisconsin Supreme Court justice (1855-1880), and chief justice (1880-1892). Cole was elected to the court in 1855 in large part because of his position of the Fugitive Slave Law, an opinion which led to his important ruling in the Sherman Booth cases. |
