Three Women Gathering Food in Ceylon

Three women standing in a row. Two of the women are carrying food in baskets and pottery on their head. They are unclothed above the waist and wearing cloth tied around their waists as skirts, which was common practice in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) at the time. They are all barefoot. The first two appear to have pierced ears and are wearing large earrings as well as necklaces. In the far background are buildings and a steep hill. In her journal from Ceylon Carrie records: "Both men and women wear a sort of skirt made of a straight piece of cloth wound around the body." |
