Madison Capitol Fence and Pinckney Street

A view of the Capitol Park and Pinckney Street taken approximately 1885-1890. The building in the center, at the intersection of Pinckney and East Washington Avenue, was the First National Bank, now the American Exchange Bank. This pastoral view of the park shows the construction method used to support the iron fence, a less expensive version of the stone coping and foundation proposed in 1872 by Architect Stephen V. Shipman. The iron fence was removed in 1899. |
