To find 124 volunteers, these twelve-by-eighteen-inch posters appeared on Madison bilboards and buildings in August 1862. The Zouave recruting officer WM. F. Vilas, the twenty-one-year-old son of Mayor Levi P. Vilas. William F. Vilas graduated from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1858 at the age of eighteen and received a a law degree from a New York law school in 1860. The papers of William F. Vilas are held in the manuscript collection of the Wisconsin Historical Society. |
