Dr. Otto L. Schmidt
Dr. Otto L. Schmidt delivers a speech from a platform in front of a stone monument on which is inscribed the text of Abraham Lincoln's Farewell Address to Springfield, Illinois. Schmidt, in his capacity as the president of the Illinois State Historical Society and chairman of the Illinois Centennial Commision, was participating in the dedication of Andrew O'Connor's bronze sculpture of Lincoln which stands on the opposite side of the monument. The official Illinois Centennial Banner, center, and other flags are draped in front of the platform; a United States flag stands at the right. There is an upright piano on the left. |

Dr. Schmidt was the husband of Emma Seipp, daughter of Chicago brewer Conrad Seipp. After the death of Seipp's widow, they became co-owners of Black Point Estate. Dr. Schmidt was a prominent Chicago Internist and early adopter of the use of x-rays in medicine. He was president of the Illinois State Historical Society 1914-1935 and was a trustee of the Chicago Historical Society 1899-1932, serving for four years as president of the board. |
