Astronaut Deke Slayton

Astronaut Donald K. Slayton of Sparta, Wisconsin. Slayton enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 at age 18 and flew 56 combat missions in B-25s during World War II. Later he was a test pilot and flight instructor. In 1959 NASA selected Slayton as one of the original seven Mercury astronauts, but later he was removed from flight status when an irregular heartbeat was discovered. He then became director of flight crew operations for the Gemini and Apollo programs. In 1972, a healthy Slayton was restored to flight status, and in 1975, he flew on the nine-day Apollo mission which successfully docked with the Soviet Soyuz spacecraft. Slayton died in 1993. A museum in Sparta, Wisconsin honors his memory. |
