Keys on depth and relief are included in the margins. Depth is illustrated with gradient tints and soundings; water areas with depths of 18 feet are shown blue.  Relief is depicted with contour lines. At the head of the title the map reads ʺSurvey of the Northern and Northwestern Lakes: Made in Obedience to the Acts of Congress and orders form Headquarters Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army".
