Caption: "The newly organized Guppey Guard formed ranks on the corner of West Cook and Wisconsin in 1877. Wisconsin equipped the men with modern Springfield rifles, but their spiffy grey and gold uniforms were furnished by the people of Portage and tailored in the shop of Loomis, Gallett and Breese. The steets were, of course, unpaved, but the gravel crossings were swept for the photo." (Wisconsin Historical Society) |
