View across street towards the Benjamin Franklin Hopkins house, 142 East Gilman Street, built by Hopkins about 1850. The house was later owned by Dr. William Jacobs. The square bay side of the first floor and the rear wings were added during the occupancy of Carl A. Johnson, 1900-1927. Then it became Raiffeisen House, CUNA's office building. Carl Johnson was a Madison industrialist, the president of the Gisholt Machine Co. Carl Johnson later built a home in Fuller's Woods.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
In 1941 National Guardian Life Insurance constructed a new building on the site at 142 E. Gilman Street and used it until they built their "new" current building at 2 E. Gilman in 1965. 142 E. Gilman was torn down about 1970 and the site is now part of the very modern Verex Building at 150 E. Gilman built in 1975. See also Image ID: 29742
