The cover features a chromolithograph illustration of a father and son on each end of a wooden plank balanced over a saw horse. The father is on the short end of the plank and has been lifted by his much smaller son. The mother, a sister holding a doll or baby, and a dog are looking on. The plank bears the text: "Dad, this is on the same principle as the Jones Lever Binder." Additional text reads: "The shortest end of an argument, or how a father was taught by his young son the meaning of lever power."
