Aviation-Minded Governor

Walter J. Kohler, Sr., (partially hidden, wearing a straw hat and with a flower in his lapel) makes a stop to which he had flown in his airplane, the "Village of Kohler." Kohler's plane was a Mahoney-Ryan-Brougham, a commercially available aircraft patterned after the "Spirit of St. Louis." Kohler was Wisconsin's first aviation-minded governor. He campaigned for office using the airplane in 1928 and during his single term in office he frequently flew between the capital and his home in Kohler. Although unidentified, this photograph is believed to have been taken during the 1928 campaign. The woman in the group is Charlotte Kohler. |
