The Skeleton of the Schooner Advance
Underwater view of algae and mussels covering the wood skeletal frame of the Advance, a schooner built in 1853 and sunk in 1885. Most of the frame is laying splayed out on the floor of Lake Michigan, but one piece, the stem post, stands straight up towards the top left corner. |

Built in 1853 in Milwaukee, this schooner was owned by Captain Paulson. On September 8, 1885, it became waterlogged and capsized in a gale 9 miles south of Sheboygan, Wis. Her cargo of bark was valued at $1,200 and insured for $800. The captain and four of the crew drowned while attempting to reach shore in a small boat. Only one sailor, Jacob Raum, survived.
