Air Wisconsin

Illustration from the annual report of Air Wisconsin, the first publicly held airline in the country. Air Wisconsin began in Appleton in 1963 after North Central Airlines terminated service to Outagamie County Airport. Air Wisconsin was organized by a group of local businessmen who sold stock to launch the new airline. Originally known as Fox Cities Airline, by the time of its first flight the name had been changed to Air Wisconsin. Service began with daily runs to Chicago, and gradually expanded to include flights from Pennsylvania to Minneapolis. At its peak, Air Wisconsin carried over 700,000 passengers a year. United Airlines purchased Air Wisconsin and merged it into its United Express service. The 1978 annual report illustrates a deHavilland Dash 7 which was to begin service in 1979. Air Wisconsin began in 1965 with two nine-passenger deHavilland Doves. |
