In 1886 a gale iced up and drove the schooner Pathfinder ashore about 2 1/2 miles north of Two Rivers Point. Despite being close to shore, the ship and its cargo of iron ore was lost, as the lake bed was comprised mostly of quick sand. The Pathfinder sank into the sand, which covered the ship through much of the years and preserving the structure. Today the ship is sitting under ten feet of water.
