Three-quarter view from front left of a Fokker Super Universal sitting on a runway. The tail identifier reads: "NC 4453." Printed on the side of the airplane is the name: "The Virginia," and "Byrd Antarctic Expedition." The "Virginia" took part in the Byrd expedition to the Antarctic in 1928, and was flown by pilot Bernt Balchen. The airplane was destroyed by a storm while in Antarctica ca. March 1929. |
