Special Whirlwind WACO

Aerial view of a WACO ASO (also known as a J-5 Straightwing and Whirlwind Waco) in flight. Below in the background is a town and fields. The tail identifier reads: "7091." The airplane is equipped with a 220 hp Wright J-5 engine. It was made to the order of T. Higbee Embry from Cincinnati. The airplane was ultimately destroyed in April, 1991 near Zellwood, Florida while being used to observe alligators. The plane dove too close to the water and was unable to pull up at such a low altitude. All three occupants were killed. |
