Man with "Monona-Mobile"
Unidentified man wearing a suit and a bow tie is standing on a pontoon of the "Monona-Mobile" (pontoon car) and holding the tow rope. Across the lake is the Wisconsin State Capitol. John "Commodore" Heggestad of Department 40 of Gisholt designed the method, the first man to cross Lake Monona by car on water. An article called "The 'Monona-Mobile'" published in a 1955 issue of the Gisholt Crib explains: "First [John "Commodore" Heggestad] constructed a pontoon support for his car, then, on the rear tires, he chained wooden cleats which serve as paddles and propel the pontoon car at a respectable speed--as high as 10 knots per hour. Steering is accomplished by a rudder suspended from the rear axle. Gisholt lensman, Sid Boyum, who recently took an action photo of the skipper and his craft from the Lake Monona shoreline, reports that the 'cruiser' appears to be completely seaworthy." |
