Leon Varjian was a student who, with his friend James Mallon, embarked on a campaign to be elected to the office of the Wisconsin Student Association, nominating themselves as the Pail and Shovel Party. Upon winning the election, Varjian upheld his previous promise to bring the Statue of Liberty to Madison. He accomplished his goal with this elaborate prank that is still celebrated at UW-Madison today. Loaned for scanning by photographer. |
