Opening Day Fishing Season - Memories of Fishing Seasons
Imaginative pen-and-ink drawing of John Anderson and Earle Robert (Rob) Metcalf hunting in the dark for nightcrawlers for fishing. John is standing and illuminating the ground with a flashlight, while Earle crouches, pulling a worm out of the ground. An owl is flying overhead. On the left is a transparent tree filled with a variety of local fish swimming "upstream" towards the sky inside the limbs. In the background on the right is a house with a porch. Sid's authorship is in the lower left corner. |

Earl's father, Robert Metcalf, was a colleague and friend of Sid Boyum at Gisholt Machine Company. This drawing appeared in Wisconsin State Journal on May 12, 1967 with the caption: "Memories of Fishing Seasons Long gone By-Hunting Night Crawlers with Grandad." Sid Boyum annually created an "Opening Day" drawing to promote the first day of the general fishing season, published from 1963 to 1989 in the Capital Times and the Wisconsin State Journal. In exchange, Sid would receive copies of the print to distribute on his own. |
