Drawing
Opening Day Fishing Season
Imaginative pen-and-ink drawing of a view from across a stream towards a cigar-smoking fisherman (probably Sid Boyum) on the opposite side of the bank. He is preparing his fishing rod, while observing a water snake biting the tail of a large trout jumping out of the stream. The fisherman is standing on the edge of the stream with his foot resting on the running board of his horse-drawn automobile. Along the riverbank, frogs are leaping, dragonflies are flying, and a tree branch is blossoming Flower blossoms are on tree branches on the right. Sid's authorship is in the lower right. The drawing appeared in the Wisconsin State Journal on May 12, 1972 with the following story by Sid: "On one opening day, I hitched up Old Nellie to Grandpa's custom-built, pollution free swamp buggy.' We drove on down through the pasture meadow to the edge of the woods and to that deep hole under a fallen tree in Sugar Creek. I was rigging up my gear when I saw a big lunker trout leap high with a water snake locked to his tail. After a short race upstream, the trout got free and kept right on going, probably all the way to Belleville. Maybe I shoulda been there yesterday - but, of course, that ain't legal." |
