Drawing
Opening Day Fishing Season

Imaginative pen-and-ink drawing of a fisherman in waders, standing in ankle deep water and bending over with one hand in the water. He is looking towards his rear, mouth open and without teeth, where a walleye is out of the water and biting the fisherman's behind. The border around the central image features a frog quartet, trees singing, a mermaid sitting on the bank, and Neptune. A fisherman's reel is resting on the bank in the foreground, surrounded by fish and other water creatures. Sid's authorship is in the lower right corner. This drawing appeared in the Wisconsin State Journal on May 3, 1974 with the caption by Sid: "It is a world of mermaids, bull frog bands, singing trees, cricket juke boxes, mosquitos with three stingers, deer fly stings, satyrs fishing hidden pools, fish in armour plate, nymphs playing piccolos, and tadpoles with mushroom umbrellas. Who can forget the time when Jim dropped his false teeth in the pond and an old walleye picked them up and turned the tables on him?" |

For Sid's photograph of his friend, Jim Taylor, that inspired this drawing, see Image ID: 123654. Sid Boyum annually created an "Opening Day" drawing to promote the first day of the general fishing season, published from 1963 to 1989 in theCapital Times and the Wisconsin State Journal. In exchange, Sid would receive copies of the print to distribute on his own. |
