Opening Day Fishing Season
Imaginative pen-and-ink drawing titled, "Today and Tomorrow — The Fisherman's Myth Never Flounders," that appeared in the Wisconsin State Journal on May 10, 1968 with Sid's caption: "Today it's a dream in a barber shop, a boast in a tavern, a hope shared by a boy and a man. Tomorrow when the fishing season opens it will be a tug on the line, a pounding heart, and elation or despair. Today the trout is big enough to swallow a barber. Tomorrow it will be barely big enough to sink a bobber. Today the fish will snap like alligators at imaginary lures thrown in a hundred directions. Tomorrow they will be temperamental and fussy, and their toothy jaws may never open. The dream grows larger until it consumes the day like the rainstorm outside the barbershop windows. Oh they'll hit tomorrow until we won't be able to carry 'em home." Sid's authorship is in the lower right corner. |
