Le Cours de Missisipi, ou de St. Louis: Fameuse Riviere de L'Amerique Septentrionale aux Environs de Laquelle se Trouve le Païs Appelle Louisiane

This map shows the Mississippi River, with latitude and longitude coordinates, ad covers east to Lake Ontario and south to Illinois. The inset map (the top half) depicts the south-eastern states, with a focus on the end point of the Mississippi emptying into the Golf of Mexico. Scattered throughout are images of animals, Indigenous villages and Native Americans hunting, participating in rituals, canoeing, and building homes. A decorative border separates the two maps complete with more images of Indigenous Americans and various animals such as a reindeer and a dog. Nicolas de Fer's ornate style of cartography comes through particularly well in the cartouche, which is elaborately engraved with images of monks and priests preaching to and baptizing Indigenous Americans, Indigenous Americans hunting, and an Indigenous American holding a scalp. |
