Map or Atlas
A Map of the British Plantations on the Continent of North America: According to the Notes and Improvements of Mr. Bolton, Made in the Original of Mr. Danville; With the History of each Colony in the Margin
This map shows the cities, plantations, lakes, rivers, mountains, Native American territories and colonial borders of the Eastern half of North America, placing particular emphasis on how far west the British colonies extend. The cartouche is elaborately decorated, and the map includes notes on the Six Indian Nations, and "unjust and false" claims of French mapmakers. Along the edge of the map, Overton placed notes on each of the colonies and Newfoundland, which gives various information on each, including soil, crops, imports and exports, history, how the land was acquired from or purchased from the Native Americans, and (especially in the paragraph on Virginia) the "depredations" of the French. |
