Map or Atlas
The Provinces of New York and New Jersey; With Part of Pensilvania, and the Province of Quebec
Map of New Jersey and New York, showing cities, forts, roads, counties, townships, land grants, rivers, lakes and several topographical features. Much of the western portions of New York and northern Pennsylvania are left bare of any indication of human settlement; these regions are instead given general labels such as "The Great Swamp," "Endless Mountains," and "Coughsaghrage, or the Beaver Hunting Country of the Confederate Indians." This last region includes a block of text describing the surrender of the country to the English and the general topography of the land. Other notations on the country are scattered throughout the map. Three insets sit in the upper left corner: "A Chart of the Mouth of Hudsons River from Sandy Hook to New York," "A Plan of Amboy, With its Environs" and "A Plan of the City of New York." The cartouche in the lower right corner is ornately illustrated, showing a scene of a river (possibly the Hudson Palisades) with trees, hills, and sailing ships. |
