Map showing the English claims in America at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. Lotter labels each of the thirteen colonies (both in the map and in the title), and shows cities, forts, boundaries, Native American land, rivers, lakes, and mountains. The title cartouche features a decorative frame topped with the royal arms of Great Britain. The boundaries Lotter, a leading German cartographer, prescribes to the colonies are unique (especially for Maine and Maryland), and show an odd mixture of French and British perspectives on American claims. The colonies are confined to east of the Appalachian mountains, a typical French cartographic convention, but secondary lines extend westward from Virginia, and North Carolina.
