Three Fish of Japan
A hand-colored lithograph of three fish specimens collected near Japan, from drawings prepared by H. Patterson. No. 1, top, is identified as Pelor japonicum - Life Size. It is a scorpion fish in the family Choridactylinae and was collected near Shimoda. No. 2, center, is Sebastes inermis - Life Size. Also known as the Japanese red rockfish, it was collected near Hakodate. No. 3, bottom, is identified as Trigla bürgeri. The specimen, a red gurnard, was collected near Shimoda; the current accepted scientific name is Chelidonichthys kumu. |
