Six Fish of Japan

A hand-colored lithograph prepared from drawings by Perry expedition draftsman Hamilton Patterson of specimens collected in the waters of Japan. Included are, No. 1, top left, Etroplus fumosus, current accepted name Acanthurus thompsoni (Thompson's surgeon fish); No. 2, top right, Heniochus macrolepidotus, accepted name Heniochus acuminatus; No. 3, middle left, Glyphisodon smaragdinus, accepted name Amblyglyphidodon curacao; No. 4, middle right, Amphiprion frenatus (red clownfish); No. 5, bottom left, Apistus rubripinnis, accepted name Paracentropogon rubripinnis; and No. 6, bottom right, Monocentris japonicus, current name Monocentris japonica (pinecone fish). Numbers one through three were collected in the Lew Chew Islands (Okinawa); the remaining were collected near Shimoda. |
