Mollusks of Japan
An etching, labeled Conchology Plate 1 depicts a number of bivalve mollusks collected and drawn by members of the Perry expedition. The specimens were described and named by American physician and conchologist John Clarkson Jay (1808-1891). Figures 1 through 6 are Cytherea formosa, accepted name Meretrix lusoria and were collected near Okinawa. Figures 7 and 10 are Mya japonica, accepted name Mya arenia, collected at Volcano Bay, Hokkaido. Figures 8 and 9 are Psammobia olivacea, current accepted name Nuttallia obscurata, collected in the Bay of Yedo (Tokyo Bay). |
