A Topographical Map of the North Part of New York Island, Exhibiting the Plan of Fort Washington, now Fort Knyphausen

This map shows the British and Hessian attack on Fort Washington in November of 1776. The movements and fortifications of the British and Hessian troops appear in red, the American in black. The topography of Upper Manhattan is remarkably detailed, showing towns, roads, bridges, fortifications, barracks, farmland, orchards, hills, forests, rivers, and creeks. Notes throughout the map explain the location and movement of the armies. An illustration of The HMS Pearl appears on the Hudson River just north of Fort Washington, and other illustrations of ships show the landings of the British troops. The map also shows "Fort Lee or Fort Consumption" in east New Jersey.
