Alvin Kraenzlein was Wisconsin's first Olympic athlete, winning 4 gold medals in individual events in the 1900s Paris Olympics (the first modern Olympics). No athlete since has won 4 gold medals in individual track events (others have always included a relay). He is also considered the inventor of the modern hurdles. He attended UW-Madison in 1897-99 and graduated from Pennsylvania as a dentist in between competing at the Olympics. Photograph (5.75 x 3.5 inches) from album loaned for scanning by Susanne Tvede. |
