Prince Philip Planting an Elm
University of Wisconsin professor of plant pathology and forestry Eugene B. Smalley (1926-2002), right, is watching as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, is shoveling dirt around a newly planted hybrid elm from Wisconsin on the grounds of Windsor Castle. The two men at left are unidentified. Smalley devoted his career to developing elm trees that were resistant to Dutch elm disease. His trees have been planted worldwide to replace elms lost to the disease. |
