Half-Way Tree

A mature, dense bur oak standing within a small fenced plot surrounded by a field. There is a wooded area in the background. This tree marked the half-way point between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River on a trail used by Native Americans from before European settlement until the late nineteenth century. The tree was still standing as of August, 2013. |
