The Goff Larch
This European Larch with two trunks was planted on the lawn of the Agricultural Dean's House on Babcock Drive on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus by Emmett S. Goff in 1899. The tree was transplanted from Door County and demonstrated "positive geotropism" with branching that was horizontal or pendulous, in contrast to the usual upward branching pattern of a larch. The tree was severely damaged by heavy snow April 11, 2007, with only a few very low branches surviving. These continued to grow and in 2016 remain an interesting feature of Allen Centennial Gardens. |
