Zion City Signs

Two signs are taped to the inside of the glass in a double hung window in a wood sided building. The photographer is reflected in the lower left corner of the window. The upper sign identifies Zion City as "The Private Home of the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church in Zion." The lower sign states: "The Use of Tobacco Is Strictly Forbidden in Zion City." Both signs carry the name of Wilbur Glenn Voliva, the head of the Christian Cathlic Apostolic Church in Zion. Voliva was the successor of faith healer John Alexander Zowie (1847-1907) who founded Zion City in 1900 and was its leader until his death. Zion City was essentially a theocracy until "independents" deposed Voliva in 1937. |
