Mrs. Rebecca Wyatt
A woman is sitting at a desk, while another woman is standing next to her looking over her shoulder. A poster showing a diagram of the Underwood Champion Keyboard is on the wall behind her. The woman sitting is Mrs. Rebecca Wyatt, the first black school teacher in Cassville. Mrs. Wyatt moved to Wisconsin from Paris, Tennessee; she was hired as a commercial teacher for the local high school. As reported in the paper at the time, the school district did not know prior to her arrival that she was not white. She was welcomed warmly, however, especially after the community learned that her husband was stationed with an Army engineer unit in Korea. |
