Wooden Bicycle "Crabtree Special"
Wooden bicycle on display against a wall at the Wisconsin State Historical Museum, circa 1920. It is known as the "Crabtree Special" because it was reportedly made in 1891 from the crotch of a crabapple tree in Bunke Hill, Wisconsin, (near Platteville) by Walter Atkinson when he was 18 years old. According to descendants of Atkinson, Walter and his brother built the bike together. The bike was donated by Allan and Maurice Park to the Wisconsin State Historical Society circa 1916, when it became part of the museum collection. |
