Vargueno, 17th c. Decorative Spanish Writing Cabinet
Vargueno on display in a museum vitrine. The label card reads: "Vargueno/Spanish-Moorish/XVII Century "Purchased by General Lucius Fairchild in Madrid when American Minister to Spain (1880-82). Said to have been acquired by the dealer from an impoverished family who had bought it from the sacristy of a church in Granada during the Carlist Wars. "The vargueno is a thoroughly typical piece of Spanish furniture. In its simplest form it is a chest with a drop-front lid, and fitted with a number of small drawers and compartments within. The outside of the chest was usually embellished with interesting locks, corners, hasps and studs of wrought iron. The favored decoration consisted of diamond-shaped pierced appliqués of iron over old red Roman velvet. The vargueno was placed on a small table or specially designed stand, or on another bureau-like chest." |
