Artesian Well

Stereograph of Artesian well. A stone wall surrounds the well, with an observation area beyond. Groups of visitors are milling about and a drive with horses and buggies is behind the well. In the background are buildings and trees. Information from the reverse: "Artesian Well. cor. Bluff & Wis. St. Flow of water, 30,000 bbls. per day. Height of pipe 10 ft. Was begun in Nov. '75 and finished in Feb. '76. Its depth is 960 ft. through 147 ft. of sand to solid rock about 2 ft. of hard limestone, then 107 ft. of soft slate or slale of a greenish color, then a soft white sand rock in which at a depth of 272 ft. the first flow of water was obtained. The sand rock continued with an occasional strata of slate & thin layers of a harder limestone until at about ?4? Ft. a sort of conglomerate sand rock was reached which yielded the most water. It blongs (sic) to the saline order of mineral waters and is very beneficial in diseases of the kidneys, bowels and all chronic diseases. Address Artsian Well Co. for pamphlet." |
