ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The Ice House was built in 1905. Coming out of the top of the roof, there was a wooden, chimney-like vent. "Between the inner board roof and the outer shingle roof was packed four inches of sawdust. This served to insulate the ice beneath it from the summer heat. The ice was sawn out of the lake during the winter, dragged by horse to the ice-house, and there packed in sawdust. When it was wanted to stock the ice-boxes of the Lodge and Ark, the hired man dug the required blocks out of the sawdust, washed them in the Lake, and hauled them by wheelbarrow to the two houses." The Wheeler frame house on the Island at Archibald Lake was commissioned by Anna Holt Wheeler, the sister of W.A. Holt. This house was known as the Ark. "When it was first built it stood on the waters edge, and this, plus some Biblical imagination, gave it its name." Source: Holt, Constance W. & Holt Jr., Donald R.(1968). "Place Names." This unpublished manuscript is part of Holt Family Albums collection.
