W.A. Holt Reading Aloud Outside to the Holt Children and Others
It is a Wednesday in the middle of August. Standing in the woods on the Island, W.A. Holt is reading aloud, possibly scripture or a children's sermon. A group of Holt children and others, sitting on wooden chairs, are listening to W.A. Holt read. In the front row, looking at the camera, Donald Holt is holding a cat. Also in the front row, Jeannette Holt is reading along with her father, and Eleanor Holt is looking down, perhaps at the dog. In the back row, Alfred Holt is wearing glasses and a suit coat. Island Lodge is in the background. |

According to Lucy Holt's great granddaughter Shan Holt in June 2018, W.A. Holt is known to have read sermons to his family and others. A well-worn copy of "Pulpit Power and Eloquence or One Hundred Best Sermons of the Nineteenth Century" compiled by Frederick M. Barton and copyrighted in 1901 was found at Island Lodge in June 2018. Advisory editors to this book include Dr. James G. K. McClure, who was a friend of the Holt family. Many photos of Dr. McClure and his family appear in the Holt Family Albums. |
