Moving Old Courthouse

Moving Old Courthouse | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
"About four o'clock I took a snapshot of the courthouse, which is now removed as far as on eighth Str.," wrote photographer John A. Glander in his diary entry of July 14, 1905. Two men are standing in front of the courthouse entrance and others are observing from the sidewalks. Glander's view of the 1856 three-story brick structure captures its move from the courthouse square onto S. 8th Street, between Washington and Marshall Streets. It's being moved to 1026 S. 8th Street, the lot south of the jail, to make room for construction of a new county courthouse. Henry Buestrin & Sons of Milwaukee has been contracted to do the work at the price of $3,960. Several layers of hardwood-beam racking, each layer turned 90 degrees, support the building's extreme weight. It's likely that long, debarked and greased hardwood logs are being used beneath the racking. As oxen pull the load forward, in this case away from the viewer, the building is slowly rolled over the logs to its destination. In the foreground, signs and businesses between Jay and Washington Streets include an apothecary post for C.A. Groffman's drug store, Doctor Huwatchek, Dentist, and A.P. Schenian, Lawyer. All three are in the Williams Block, which is out of view to the left. "Hotel" marks the German House awning, and the hardware store of Wernecke & Schmitz is on the corner. The two-story brick building and fenced yard on the right is Fred Lohe's meat market. Streetcar tracks run down the center of the street.
