Dunning's Grocery Store

Dunning's Grocery Store | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
View of Washington Street from South 18th Street, facing west. Signage identifies the two-story structure on the left as Dunning's Clover Farm Store. Patterned tiles surround the storefront windows, and a "Kingsbury Beer" sign is hanging from the facade. The adjacent Tankar Gas Station, managed by Merlin Rupelt, offers gas at 26.9 cents per gallon. Dufek's Sinclair Service Station is on the next corner. On the right, a highway marker denotes US 141, 151 and WIS 42. Dunning's, at 1805 Washington Street, was a grocery, liquor store and bakery owned by Edward C. and Margaret Adams Dunning. It was co-managed by Harold R. Monka and Christian (Ket) Peitersen, who were also the store's butchers. Mr. Peitersen's wife, Adeline, was the bookkeeper, and the family lived above the store. Boys of high school age were employed as stock boys and girls as clerks after school and on weekends. Dunning's was not a self-service grocery; the customer called and gave a list or told a clerk at the counter what he or she wanted. The clerk gathered the items, and the purchase was completed. Delivery to customer's homes was done, as well. The store's popularity was partly due to its outstanding homemade bakery and delicatessen items prepared from Mrs. Dunning's recipes and the fact that it was one of the very few stores open on Sunday. An after-church stop and wait in line beneath the light green-colored pressed tin ceiling for hot, sliced ham, fresh bread and hard rolls, baked beans, German potato salad, meat loaf and other specialties was a cherished tradition for many families. Previously known as The Adams Bakery, the property was acquired in 1914 by Edward and Margaret Dunning from her father, Thomas J. Adams. It was in operation until 1970.
