Bernard H. Mahnke
Waist-up portrait of Bernard H. Mahnke (1891-1978) standing behind a counter packaging groceries, possibly for delivery. Merchandise lines shelves in the background. Mr. Mahnke owned and operated Mahnke & Multerer, 1302 Washington Street, from 1918 to 1960 along with Joseph Multerer, Jr. The neighborhood grocery store was a member of the Manitowoc Retail Grocers' Association of which Mahnke was a charter member and president. It became a Clover Farm store in 1933 with the opening of the Eastern Wisconsin Division of the Clover Farm Stores system. The Plumb & Nelson Company was the local wholesale supplier. Newspaper advertisements in 1933 offered items such as freshly-ground coffee at $.25 per pound, flour at $.71 for a 24 1/2 pound bag, three pounds of fresh tomatoes for $.25, four bars of Palmolive soap for $.25, and a large bunch of California carrots for $.05. |
