Wooden Ojibwe Pipe Stem
A pipe stem presented to Wisconsin territorial governor James D. Doty at Fort Winnebago. Wooden stem is three inches at widest part. It is flat, half carved, and decorated with quillwork in white, orange, red, and brown with Thunderbird figures on one side. Horse hair and remnants of pileated woodpecker scalp (with some remaining feathers) at either end of quilled section. Lower section pierced with round and elongated rectangular holes with inner surfaces painted red. Handwritten on one side of lower section in ink: "Presented By Tay che gwi au nee for his Father 'The Buffalo' a principal Chippewa chief on south shore of Lake Superior in Council at Fort Winnebaygo [sic] February 12. 1844." |
